Almost nothing is worse than going to boot up your computer, and nothing happens. There are alot of different reason why this can happen with your computer, but thankfully most of them have an easy and quick solutiuon - Doing a PMU-Reset of the machine.
What actually happens with a PMU-Reset is that the Power Mangement Unit in your computer is reset. This chip controls how power moves internally in your computer, and as such it is essential for the computer to be able to boot up properly. Most of the issues related to a computer not booting can be resolved by doing a PMU-Reset.
To complete a PMU reset you have to:
- Remove the power from the machine. The adapter for notebook, and the cable for a desktop
- Push the Power button, and hold it for 20 seconds
- The PMU-Reset is now done, and you can turn on your machine again.
- For Notebooks it's recommended to turn on the machine before you plug the adapter back in
- If the machine turns on now, the PMU has been succesfully reset and you can use your computer like usual.
Here we have listed a couple of the normal reasons why a PMU-Reset might be neccessary.
- The computer has been put into the sleep function whilst having a low battery level
- While shut down had not yet been completed the charger was pulled out.
- During last use, the Battery was completely discharged of power
If you can solve an issue with a PMU-reset, then there is no need to worry about further issues, these are not the symptom of anything larger, and can you generally avoid the reasons mentioned above, you will most likely avoid these kinds of issues regarding start-up completely.
